Wabasca RCMP New Detachment
Wabasca, AlbertaOur architectural firm, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of subconsultants, led the design and construction administration for the replacement of the original RCMP detachment, constructed in the mid-1990s. The original facility, now obsolete due to population growth, staffing increases, and excessive wear in its semi-remote location, also required upgrades to accommodate advancements in policing technology. The new facility includes a 14-unit cell block.
The design incorporated Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, focusing on preventing unauthorized access. The exterior cladding was designed to be non-climbable, and windows were placed above 6'0" to limit visibility into the building. Secure areas within the facility are clearly delineated, with access controlled internally by staff. Durability of exterior materials and interior finishes was prioritized to withstand the challenging environment, with design details simplified to facilitate the involvement of local trades. The project also integrates artwork from the local First Nations community.

Given the project's proximity to an airport, careful coordination with Transport Canada was required for building height and radio tower placement, with sound attenuation as a critical consideration. The building is strategically sited to allow for future administrative expansion with minimal disruption to operations and site circulation.
