Cross Cancer Institute Vault 8 Linear Accelerator Retrofit
Edmonton, AlbertaThe Vault 8 Linear Accelerator at the Cross Cancer Institute had surpassed its useful lifespan and was replaced with cutting-edge technology: a multi-energy machine featuring kilovolt imaging capabilities. Alberta Health Services (AHS) selected the Varian TrueBeam/VitalBeam Edition to align with modern standards of care and performance.
This project required retrofitting the existing Vault structure to accommodate the new linear accelerator. Given the complexity of the installation, the process involved a thorough site investigation and a careful review of available as-built drawings to assess existing conditions. ACI collaborated closely with a team of consultants to ensure that all services were fully compatible with the new equipment. In addition, ACI engaged with the user group to ensure that patient care and overall patient experience were central to the design aesthetics of the room.

Patient safety and accessibility are paramount in healthcare design, and these priorities were carefully considered throughout the design and construction phases. The project scope also included upgrading modular furniture in the Control Room, enhancing millwork storage throughout the vault, and incorporating new materials and infrastructure to meet stringent Infection Protection Control standards. The design, developed in close partnership with the user group and staff, emphasized the use of natural materials and ceiling imagery, all while maintaining strict lighting control requirements.
This comprehensive project not only modernized aging infrastructure but also delivered a state-of-the-art solution, enhancing the treatment capabilities of the Cross Cancer Institute. By prioritizing both safety and operational efficiency, the upgrade ensures improved patient outcomes and adheres to the highest standards in radiation oncology.
