Bow Valley High School Modernization

Cochrane, Alberta

In collaboration with our partners, ACI is honored to be a part of the Bow Valley High School major modernization and expansion project aimed at meeting the needs of the growing community in the Rocky View School Division.

Originally opened in 2001 for grades 9 through 12, this redesigned facility will not only increase the school capacity to 1,425 students but introduce flexible spaces that cater to future academic, athletic, and Career and Technology Studies needs. A unique feature stair will be incorporated into the Learning Commons, serving as both a gathering space and an impromptu performance area, and designed to meet accessibility needs. The expansion also includes an additional 137 parking stalls to accommodate both students and staff.

The architectural finishes were carefully selected to complement the existing structure, which features a large-radius curved second floor clad in muted mint green Vicwest vertical metal panels. This curve inspired the new expansion, where the radius is reinterpreted as a two-dimensional, large-patterned curve on the façade. A curved slat screen at the east entrance and above the main entry acts as a unifying element between the existing and expanded areas, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

The material palette remains simple yet sophisticated, with matching metal cladding, a complementary brick tone, and aluminum longboard products that evoke the warmth of wood. These materials create inviting entrances, aligning with Cochrane's vision of buildings that reflect the natural character of the Foothills region.

This project represents a significant investment in the future of education, providing a modern, adaptable space for students and staff that meets both present and future needs, while also contributing to the broader community’s growth and development.
