Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association New Office

Edmonton, Alberta

The Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association (ANFCA) New Office was developed following the structural failure of the organization’s previous facility, which had become unsafe for occupancy. An initial assessment and temporary shoring measures stabilized the building, but the extent of deterioration required a complete replacement. The new office was envisioned as both a continuation of ANFCA’s legacy and a long-term investment in its future, supporting the organization’s evolving role across the province.

The building integrates contemporary workplace functionality with culturally meaningful design elements. A defining feature is the cedar trellis, inspired by natural sun patterns and the movement of water, and expressed throughout the interior as a unifying material language. A rooftop ceremonial space supports gatherings and reinforces the building’s role as a place of connection. Accessibility was prioritized through the inclusion of an elevator and thoughtful circulation planning. Material selections, including PVC-free flooring and extensive cedar applications, reflect a balance between environmental responsibility and cultural significance.

A highly collaborative process guided the project from early planning through delivery. Ongoing engagement with ANFCA leadership, Board member and staff maintained alignment with operational goals, while dedicated sessions with Elders introduced cultural knowledge that shaped key design decisions. This inclusive approach grounded the project in both organizational values and community context.

Project delivery required adaptability in response to evolving conditions. Schedule adjustments and a reclassification from residential to commercial occupancy introduced additional coordination, code requirements, and cost considerations. Through careful planning and close collaboration with the consultant team and contractor, the project advanced while maintaining alignment with ANFCA’s priorities.

The completed facility supports day-to-day operations while providing a welcoming, culturally grounded environment. It reflects ANFCA’s mission, strengthens connections across its network, and establishes a lasting presence for future generations.
