Civic, Community and Care: Recent Project Milestones Across Alberta

August 28, 2025 —

ACI’s recent project completions across Edmonton and Strathcona County include the Edmonton EXPO Centre Renewal, The Pointe Agricultural Event Centre, and the Saville Family Beach & Enchanted Forest. Each facility has reached full operational status within the last year and is now serving the community. The projects vary in scope — from major event infrastructure to rural programming and pediatric healthcare environments — but share a common emphasis on community, accessibility, and long-term use.

Edmonton EXPO Centre Renewal

Edmonton, Alberta

The Edmonton EXPO Centre remains one of Alberta’s largest and most adaptable event venues. This recent renewal project focused on revitalizing underperforming areas, modernizing circulation routes, and upgrading key infrastructure components across the facility. Scope included envelope improvements, systems upgrades, interior refinements, and improved back-of-house support to streamline logistics for major events and exhibitions.

Design decisions prioritized high-traffic durability, functional zoning, and alignment with long-term programming demands. Circulation improvements reduced operational bottlenecks and improved wayfinding, particularly during high-capacity events. The outcome is a more efficient, flexible and serviceable venue, ready to accommodate future growth in event programming.

The Pointe Agricultural Event Centre

Strathcona County, Alberta

Located in Pointe-aux-Pins Acres, The Pointe is a rural-focused agricultural and event centre designed for multipurpose use. Its core spaces — an adaptable large-span arena, meeting rooms, and support areas — enable year-round 4‑H programs, workshops, exhibitions, and community functions. The project was developed to meet the region’s need for modernized, all-season agricultural infrastructure.

The building’s straightforward plan allows for efficient transitions between programs while supporting accessibility and ease of use for a wide user range. Exterior materials were selected for longevity and maintainability, while interior layouts focus on flexibility. The facility is now active and operating as a central hub for rural educational programming and agricultural event hosting.

Saville Family Beach & Enchanted Forest

Stollery Children’s Hospital, Edmonton

The Saville Family Beach and Enchanted Forest project, completed in March 2024, reimagines therapeutic play at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Blending an immersive indoor renovation with a rooftop outdoor play area, it offers patients opportunities for physical therapy, recreational programming, and family engagement in uplifting ways.

Inside, the “Beach” features a fully accessible kitchen, an interactive sandcastle brought to life with projection mapping, dedicated zones for older children, and playful, beach-inspired elements designed to ease stress and encourage social play. Outside, the Enchanted Forest turns the rooftop into a sensory-rich environment, blending nature-based structures, musical elements, and therapeutic programming in a space that can be enjoyed seasonally. Together, these spaces have become integral to daily life at the hospital, supporting both care and play.
