Edmonton EXPO Centre Renewal
Edmonton, AlbertaThe Edmonton EXPO Centre has completed a major rehabilitation, renewing 48,500 m² of event, exhibition, and conference space originally constructed in 1983. Delivered through an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model, the project brought together a collaborative team to modernize the facility while maintaining full operations throughout construction.
The scope of work addressed aging infrastructure across mechanical, electrical, structural, and envelope systems. A new envelope system was completed on the aging portion of the facility— including a reconfigured Entrance 6— to improve energy efficiency. This work was guided by energy modelling, which played a central role in shaping the renewal strategy and supporting the transition from mid-efficiency hydronic systems to a high-efficiency, low-temperature cascading system. This upgrade, paired with a 5.5-megawatt rooftop solar array, has reduced the facility’s annual carbon output by over 3,920 tonnes, supporting the City of Edmonton’s broader sustainability goals.
Interior improvements included refreshed finishes, upgraded infrastructure, and improved building performance across all original halls. The rehabilitation also focused on operational efficiency, occupant comfort, and long-term resilience. Working within an active venue— with a resident sports team and a full calendar of events— required a flexible, phased approach. Construction sequencing was carefully coordinated to align with Explore Edmonton’s programming, allowing the project to proceed without disruption or budget escalation.
