West Village Square Renovation
Edmonton, AlbertaWest Village Square transforms the previously underutilized space beneath MacEwan University’s west towers into a sheltered, high-capacity pedestrian hub and campus gathering area. Located below MacEwan Way—the primary east–west circulation spine—the project converts approximately 3,200 m² of interior space that previously functioned as an exposed exterior zone with limited usability.
The redevelopment reorganizes this below-grade condition into a clearly defined interior environment that supports daily pedestrian movement, informal gathering, and campus connectivity. The space functions as both a circulation corridor and a destination, accommodating high volumes of foot traffic while creating opportunities for pause, interaction, and orientation within the urban campus.

A primary driver of the project was improving accessibility and occupant movement at grade. West Village Square creates a fully indoor east–west pathway that allows users to travel between buildings without leaving the protected building envelope. This condition removes reliance on exterior routes and improves mobility for individuals using wheelchairs or other assistive devices. Clear sightlines and intuitive spatial flow guide pedestrians through the space while supporting efficient exiting capacity beneath the towers.
Design development addressed the technical constraints of an existing service-heavy undercroft. Mechanical systems and overhead utilities were carefully integrated into the architectural expression, balancing operational requirements with improved spatial proportions and visual clarity. Wind mitigation strategies, lighting upgrades, and surface treatments contribute to a more comfortable, legible environment throughout the year.
Material selections prioritize durability and longevity within a high-traffic institutional setting. Finishes were selected to withstand intensive daily use while reinforcing the identity of the space as part of MacEwan University’s broader public realm. An open-layout strategy supports flexible uses and accommodates peak class-change volumes.
West Village Square strengthens the pedestrian network at the heart of MacEwan’s downtown campus. By converting an awkward existing condition into an active interior street, the project expands the functional capacity of existing infrastructure while contributing to a more connected and inclusive campus environment. The completed space elevates a previously overlooked area into a central component of everyday movement for students, staff, and visitors.
