The rehabilitation project modernized approximately 60,000 sq. ft., and was guided by the City of Edmonton’s design, technical, accessibility and sustainability principles and policies. The scope included a full overhaul of the 50-metre pool, the installation of brand-new filtration and pool mechanical systems, and the modernization of the facility interior. A cold plunge pool was added as part of the project, as well as fully rehabilitated whirlpool, steam, and sauna amenities. Accessibility was also comprehensively integrated through the addition of an elevator, a ramp into the hot tub, and barrier-free spectator seating. These enhancements will enable facility users of all ages and abilities to enjoy the aquatic centre.

Building envelope and systems upgrades were key components of the rehabilitation and supported the integration of City of Edmonton’s sustainability policies. The scope included a complete redesign of the exterior envelope glazing, transforming the original infill glass between the iconic structural elements into a specialized new curtain wall system, integrated with an enhanced building envelope, high efficiency‑ mechanical equipment, and upgraded electrical fixturing. Together, these improvements supported City of Edmonton environmental performance targets, aligned with LEED certification goals, and extended the building’s service life while improving overall user comfort. Significant rehabilitation work in the washrooms, changerooms, sauna, whirlpool, and steam room has also improved the user experience.

Throughout the project, the design team remained committed to preserving the building’s heritage character and the architectural clarity of Peter Hemingway’s original vision. Its iconic form remains central to the experience, now supported by a suite of modern systems and materials that position the facility to serve the community in new and lasting ways for decades to come.

The City of Edmonton has been an exceptional partner in bringing this important rehabilitation project to life.
