We are so proud to celebrate a major professional milestone—Dane Santos is now a Registered Architect! A Creative Path Takes Shape

For Dane, architecture grew out of a lifelong love of art and people. She shares that she “was always doodling growing up” and has “always had a passion for art and a love for people.” While she initially explored sciences in university, it wasn’t until she took art and design courses that something clicked. Encouraged by her professors—one of whom had experience working in an architecture firm—she began to see new possibilities for a career that blended art and design. “I felt the pull, it was clear design was where I was meant to be.”

That feeling solidified after graduation. “Getting my first job at an architecture firm confirmed it. I knew this was the right path for me.”

Learning Through Experience

The road to registration wasn’t without its challenges. Between completing hours, maintaining logbooks, and preparing for exams, Dane describes the process as a constant cycle of learning. “Every project is different—you think you know something, but there’s always more to learn.”

Through it all, she developed not only technical knowledge but also stronger communication skills. “You have to be able to explain complex ideas simply,” she explains. “Talking with clients means meeting them where they’re at and making those conversations approachable.” She also learned the importance of balance, finding a rhythm that allows for growth without burnout.

Designing for People

Dane’s philosophy is grounded in a simple but powerful idea: design for people. “It’s about understanding how a space will actually be used,” she says. Whether navigating tight timelines or complex constraints, she returns to that principle. “Who is using the space? How are they using it? That’s what matters.”

She emphasizes that great design is not just aesthetics—it’s functional, responsive, and thoughtful. “You’re working within budgets, technical requirements, and stakeholder feedback. It’s about finding the balance and being open to input.”

Looking Back—and Ahead

Reflecting on her journey, Dane is proud of how far she’s come. “I made it,” she says with a smile. “After all the self-doubt and critiques, becoming a registered architect is something I’m really proud of.” Seeing her designs come to life—and used by real people—is especially fulfilling.

Looking ahead, she’s eager to take on more leadership roles while continuing to learn from her team. “You’re never alone here at ACI,” she says. She’s particularly excited about the idea of designing a recreation centre—something that aligns with her fitness interests and daily life.

Her advice to emerging architects? “Take care of yourself, be open to feedback, and don’t be afraid to try new things. Every experience teaches you something.”

Congratulations, Dane—we can’t wait to see what you design next!
